Global Hydrogen Refueling Stations Exceed 1,000 with China Leading the Pack, According to EVTank
According to the latest data from research firm EVTank, as of the first half of 2023, the world has seen a cumulative construction of 1,089 hydrogen refueling stations. Notably, China has solidified its position as the global leader in this domain, accounting for 351 of these stations, which represents a 32.2% share of the total.
In a recent white paper titled “China’s Hydrogen Refueling Station Construction and Operation Industry Development 2023”, jointly released by EVTank and the China Battery Industry Research Institute, it’s highlighted that of the global total, the lion’s share of these refueling stations are primarily located in countries and regions such as Japan, South Korea, other parts of Asia, and North America. With more than 60% of the total count, Asia is unequivocally leading the world in the construction of these vital refueling infrastructure points.
Zooming in on China’s regional distribution, the white paper provides an illuminating view. Guangdong tops the chart with 55 stations, followed closely by Shandong with 34. Provinces like Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hebei, and Henan have also been proactive, with each boasting more than 20 stations. The push for these refueling points isn’t isolated to a handful of provinces. As of June 2023, 22 provinces and cities across China have released supportive policies for hydrogen infrastructure development. These policies not only advocate for the construction of more stations but also specify clear goals for 2025. Notably, regions like Guangxi and Xinjiang have voiced their intent to strategically position themselves with a surge in these stations in the coming years.
Drawing conclusions from the data, EVTank projects that by 2025, China alone could see a staggering cumulative construction of over 1,000 hydrogen refueling stations, underscoring the nation’s commitment to pivot towards cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.
